Healthy Food Tips: Top 5 Best Foods to Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a ubiquitous "silent" disease of the bones that leads to fragile bones and increases the risk of fracture. Certain foods can help you prevent this disease and improve your overall health. Eating an alkalizing diet with foods high in calcium and avoiding sodas, sugar, coffee, and alcohol are the best ways to fend off osteoporosis. While women are more prone to develop this condition, men may also be affected. Your diet should provide at least 1,200 milligrams of calcium each day. Here are top five best foods to prevent osteoporosis:
Dairy Products
Dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D. If you are on a diet, choose low fat milk, yogurt, and cheese to reduce calories and saturated fat. Those who are lactose intolerant can drink milk with added lactase enzymes. Some dairy products are fortified with vitamin D.
Broccoli
Broccoli is an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, folate, vitamin K, and vitamin B6. This highly alkalizing vegetable also contains vitamin C, which helps the body absorb calcium more efficiently. Broccoli is rich in antioxidants and helps prevent prostate, breast, colon, bladder, and ovarian cancers. One cup of broccoli contains 200 milligrams of calcium.
Soy Products
Soy products contain isoflavones, which helps balance estrogen levels. Hormone imbalances can contribute to bone loss. Studies indicate that regular consumption of soy products lowers the risk of bone fracture, particularly among early post-menopausal women. Many soy foods are naturally high in calcium and contain certain types of isoflavones that may reduce the breakdown of bones.
Oats
Oats provide a host of mineral components essential for bone health. Due to its high calcium content, this food is a powerful weapon against osteoporosis. Eating oats regularly can also improve circulatory function and reduce cholesterol levels. Oats helps in treating osteoporosis, relieves cramps, mends bones, and strengthens teeth.
Sardines
If you are looking for a rich source of calcium other than milk, sardines are a great choice. Three ounces of sardines contain 325 milligrams of calcium. These fish are rich in numerous nutrients that support cardiovascular health, strengthen the bone matrix, and keep your immune system strong. They also contain high amounts of protein and amino acids. Older adults in particular should consume at least 46 grams of protein a day to prevent osteoporosis. If you buy canned sardines, choose those with less salt. Researchers have found that for ever 2,300 milligrams of sodium you take in, you lose approximately 40 milligrams of calcium.

Children's Health - Choosing Healthy Foods For Your Kids

Are you concerned about your child's eating habits? It can be challenging to feed toddlers a healthy diet every day, but I have a secret weapon. A homemade smoothie is an easy way to serve your child at least one serving of fruits, vegetables, and calcium every day. Follow these five simple guidelines to help your child eat a nutritious diet:
Five Effortless Nutrition Suggestions for More Nutritious Kids:
3+ portions of veggies, 2 portions of fruit, 3 portions of whole grain products, 3 food servings of calcium, 1/2 their entire body weight in grams of lean health proteins
One serving size of veggies is just one cup raw or 1/2 cup prepared. Even though it can often be difficult to get small children to eat raw vegetables, it's simple to include at least one portion of veggies in a delicious homemade smoothie. Spinach, mixed greens, and steamed baby carrots are specially effortless to conceal in mouth watering shakes. One of the best smoothie recipe with blended veggies is called Frog Juice, and my favorite recipe made with baby carrots is Bunny Juice. Your kids will happily eat their vegetables if you serve them inside a healthy smoothie!
It's substantially simpler and easier to persuade children to eat their fruits instead of vegetables. One helping of fresh fruit is one actual fruit (such as 1 apple or mango), or 3/4 cup of berries. Although fruits aren't necessary to make great drinks, smoothies taste better with a bit of sweet fruit added! Frozen bananas are very popular in smoothies, because they add cold and creamy texture to the drink. The preparation to add bananas into a juice smoothie is basically non-existent: just peel and throw in. Apples are another popular fresh fruits to add to smoothies. Apples are very nutritious and taste great.
Whole Grain Products have a greater nutritional value than processed, highly refined, white grains. Because children consume a relatively small amount of food day-to-day, it is imperative to ensure that they receive the maximum nutritional value for the amount of food that they eat. One serving of whole grains is equal to 1/2 cup cooked rice or pasta, 1 slice of whole grain bread, 1/2 cup dry oatmeal or 1 cup whole grain breakfast cereal (with less than 6 grams of sugar, and 3 or more grams of fiber per serving). You can easily add a serving of breakfast cereal to your child's drinks, or add dry oats if your vita mixer is effective enough. The whole grain cereal found in the baby section is one other option, though it will be challenging to find a baby cereal with at least 3 grams per serving of fibers.
Chances are your son or daughter will get nearly all of their daily calcium supplement by drinking milk, but calcium is also found in yogurt, cottage cheese, traditional cheeses, green veggies, legumes, and tofu, along with calcium-fortified food items including waffles and orange fruit juice. One serving of calcium is equal to 1 cup dairy, yogurt, or calcium-fortified juice, 1/2 to One cup beans or broccoli, or four ounces of tofu. You should seek out low-fat versions of dairy, yogurt, and cheese, which are healthier since they have less artery-clogging fat. Children over the age of 2 should always consume 1% milk, never the full fat variety. Smoothies made with low-fat milk, soymilk, citrus veggie juice, or even low-fat natural yogurt are specially scrumptious solutions to consume your calcium.
Lean proteins is another sticky point in children's diets. My own child weighs in at 36 pounds. It's ideal for her to consume one half of that in grams, 18 grams, of lean protein each and every day. Children can get protein from a assortment of sources: cooked chicken, poultry hamburgers, yogurt, lowfat milk, peanut butter, tofu, eggs, almonds, vegan burgers, lasagna, and string cheese are common proteins sources amongst this particular age bracket. You'll really need to look at nutrition facts for one's particular grams of proteins for each amount for each item. Try to consider that barbequed chicken along with turkey burgers are definitely the hefty hitters, averaging twenty-one gr of protein per helping that is the dimensions of ones palm. Natural yogurt, low-fat dairy, peanut butter, as well as tofu are usually fantastic sources of trim necessary protein that taste delightful in kid's shakes!
Now that we've reduced down every single nutrition rule you can see exactly how our nourishing smoothie tested recipes for children could go a considerable ways to ensure your child is ingesting great-tasting, healthful food each day. All the best!
Disclosure: I 'm not an expert in nutrition, only a mommy attempting to make certain my little princess dines on food that is as nutritious as possible. Speak with your doctor before switching your child's diet.

The Sweet Health Benefits Of Sour Foods

As a young man, I remember my grandmother trying to give me sauerkraut for dinner once and making the worst face possible in response to which my grandmother laughed and said, "Sauerkraut is not only good, it's good for you!" When I tell my patients about sauerkraut as a health food, they make almost that same funny face! Recently, however, it turns out that grandma's words were correct - sauerkraut has a surprising health benefit to it as do other fermented foods. In fact, a group of Polish women were recently studied for their rates of breast cancer. The group who ate a lot of sauerkraut had very low rates of breast cancer.
Health Benefits of Fermented Foods
Fermented foods, like sauerkraut, olives, pickles, sourdough bread have been around for a long time. They were created to help food keep longer using a natural fermentation process called lacto-fermentation. In this process, beneficial lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria (the kind that live in your gut and help digest your foods) convert the starch and sugar in foods to lactic acid. The lactic acid acted as a preservative so refrigeration was not necessary and food had a long shelf life.
A surprising, little known health benefit about these fermented foods was then discovered. It seems that the same fermentation process that both preserves and gives these foods their distinctive sour-tangy taste are also higher in vitamins and actually help your digestion, remove excess saturated fats and cholesterol, and keep your digestive tract healthy and happy.
In fact, these good bacteria present in naturally fermented food have recently started popping up all over television ads and health food articles as "probiotics" which restore and maintain your intestinal flora, i.e., the level of good bacteria in your gut. In case you didn't know this, your large intestine, the place that houses all these beneficial bacteria, is the very seat of your immune system. When your beneficial bacteria levels are optimal, you have a healthy immune system strong enough to ward off infections and other diseases.
Many fermented foods, like olives, also contain good Omega-3 fatty acids that are beneficial in reducing inflammation throughout your body.
Not All Sour Foods Are Naturally Fermented
When I tell my patients about naturally fermented superfoods, they say, great I'll pick up some at the grocery store! However, most canned sauerkraut, pickles, greek olives on the shelves, and buttermilks, yogurts, and kefir in your dairy section of your grocery store may not have been created through a natural fermentation process and may not contain the live bacteria.
In fact, many of these grocery store varieties of sour-tasting dairy foods are pasteurized, and the canned-shelf varieties can get their sour taste through the addition of vinegar (a fermented food in itself) and/or certain preservative-grade minerals like potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate added to extend shelf life. Most have lactic acid added to them rather than it developing naturally in the fermentation process described above. However, even these grocery store varieties of "fast" fermented foods give some health benefits in addition to their vitamins, minerals, proteins, fiber, etc, just not as much as naturally fermented that contain the live culture.
Unless your local grocery store has a special section for refrigerated health foods, you likely will have to go to a health food or natural foods store to get real, naturally fermented, nonpasteurized sauerkraut, pickles, olives, kefir, buttermilk and yogurt. You can also make your own fermented foods very easily. Fermentation starter kits are available, along with directions how to ferment many foods, in health food stores and/or online.
What Fermented Foods Are Available?
Sauerkraut is perhaps the most well-known fermented food. It is a staple in German and Polish cuisine. If you've ever eaten Korean food, you may have eaten kimchi, fermented spicy cabbage and other vegetables, which is a staple food in Korea. In fact, researchers found that Avian flu infected chickens, who were fed a kimchi extract, recovered! Sake, a Japanese rice wine, is also a fermented food, as are all wines, red or white varieties, and most beers. You've also likely eaten soy sauce on your rice if you eat Chinese food, and have at least heard of tempeh, fermented soybeans. Here are some other commonly fermented foods:
•Pickles, olives, onions, mustard greens - Omega 3's, promote good gut bacteria.
•Yogurt, kefir, buttermilk, cheese - benefit digestion and stoke the immune system.
•Natto - Japanese, from which nattokinase is made, beneficial to heart health as it dissolves blood clots. Contains vitamin K2 which research has proven to prevent osteoporosis and breast cancer.
•Miso - Japanese. Miso is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of Hiroshima victims who were fed traditional Japanese miso soup in the hospitals.
•Coffee - research shows coffee to have strong antioxidant properties and the ability to lower blood sugar levels in diabetics.
•Chocolate - contains important antioxidants, as much as fruit without the sugar!
You've likely eaten and enjoyed fermented foods for a long time and not known what a great health benefit you were getting from them. Who knew pickles and chocolate could be health foods? Read labels carefully and make sure they say either "naturally fermented" or contain "live cultures", or "lactobacillus acidophilus", to be sure you are getting the most health benefit from your fermented foods. Bon appétit!
Stay well,

10 Motivational Health Tips to Help You Maintain Your Weight During the Holiday Season

1. Eat in Moderation.
Don't overdo eating during the holiday season. Eat only what you need to eat, and don't simply eat because the food is there. Eating a small meal at home before you go to a holiday party can help too. Eating in moderation can take extra discipline during the holiday season, because there is just so much food available, but it can be mastered.
2. Parking farther away when going shopping.
When you are out holiday shopping make it a habit to park farther away from the door. I know that you may live in an area where it is cold outside, but this is an almost effortlessly way to assist you in maintaining your weight during the holiday season. If you are one that shops a lot all of those longer walks to the front door of the department store can pay off. I myself enjoy getting a great parking space as well during the holiday season. But I enjoy maintaining my weight more!
3. Think About It.
Practice thinking about how good you are going to feel after the holiday season is over, and you have maintained your weight. Think about how you will feel after the holiday season is over if you have picked up those extra unwanted pounds. This in itself can be a great motivator!
4. Write yourself a note.
Write a note to yourself before that big holiday meal or big family gathering. Tell yourself what your plans are to maintain your weight, then read it again during the meal and then after. Put the note somewhere where you can read it quickly and privately (a sticky note on a dollar bill in your wallet will work).
5. Buy yourself a new outfit at the beginning of the holiday season.
Purchase yourself a new dress or new outfit your current size, and tear off the tags and throw the receipt away. If you can afford it buy an expensive dress or outfit. This should help you work extra hard to maintain your weight, especially when you have tossed the receipt and torn off the tags! After all who likes to waste money? An extra motivator to fit into your new dress or pair of pants is to plan to wear your new threads somewhere special on New Years Eve.
6. Reward Yourself.
Write down a list of things that you will reward yourself with for maintaining your weight. Make your reward date the day after the holiday season has officially ended for you. Your rewards can be small for example a magazine, manicure, trip to the beauty salon, etc.
7. Keep Track of Your Eating and Exercise.
Keep a holiday journal and keep track of your healthy and unhealthy holiday habits. Set healthy habit goals, and stick to them! Try your hardest not to get off track, but if you do remember that everyday is a fresh start!
8. Positive Talk and a Positive Walk.
Tell yourself every day, several times a day "I maintain my current weight with minimal effort." I look good at ______ pounds." "I am amazed at how I maintained my current weight during the holiday season." And walk with confidence in knowing that you are fabulous at your current weight (no matter what that is)!
9. Be accountable to someone.
Share with a friend or family member how important it is to you to maintain your weight during the holiday season. Initiate a H.A.T. (Holiday Accountability Team), this can be your spouse, children, or any other individual who will help you stay on track. Maintain frequent contact with them during the holiday season and develop a tool or list of questions that you will discuss related to maintaining your weight (doesn't have to be in-depth), during the holiday season.
10. Be EMPOWERED!
If you think you can do it, then you can! The holiday season is a difficult time for those of us who are seriously working on maintaining our weight. It is important for us to be empowered from within to maintain our weight during this holiday season, and believing that WE CAN DO IT is vital!

Top Ten Attitudes of Health and Fitness

I have a unique opportunity to work with many types of people. This allows me the chance to observe different fitness attitudes. It is this attitude toward nutrition, health and exercise that shows as people engage in physical activity. I will share the top ten attitudes list with you.
Attitude number one is Good Intentions. This person is always "meaning to" get some exercise. They talk about it, they put it on their schedules, but for some reason they never get around to it. This person could use an accountability group or partner. All they need is someone to hold them to their commitments and keep them on the right path.
Attitude number two is the Guilt Builder. This person knows they should be exercising and eating better but they just can't seem to make themselves do it. Whether it is low energy or low motivation, they have trouble with actually getting started and this causes them to feel very guilty each time they don't do what they think they "should" be doing. Instead, they often end up doing only what they feel like.
Attitude number three is the Socializer. This person shows up where healthy activity is going on, but only joins in when they have a buddy to talk to. They enjoy being around others and watching others engage in activity. They are interested in healthy living, but they don't always make time to participate unless it becomes a social opportunity.
Attitude number four is Apathetic. These folks understand what it takes to be healthy and fit but they just don't care about it. They are comfortable where they are and don't see the need to change. This is a difficult mindset to change. Apathy takes a major life event to alter.
Attitude number five is Under Duress. You have seen these folks. They are doing the health thing, but they are not happy about it. Most likely a doctor or spouse has told them that they must do this. They put their time in, but often get lack luster results. Because their heart is not in it, they get less endorphin release and tend to not push their intensity.
Attitude number six is the Hedonist. You will not see them working out, playing sports or making healthy food choices. They live for the pleasure of the moment, never thinking about the consequences down the road. No momentary pain for long-term gain here. If it feels good, do it! That is their motto. They do not feel guilt for their poor choices. They embrace the short-term pleasures lifestyle and it is reflected in the way they look and feel.
Attitude number seven is the Enthusiast. This is the person who loves to exercise and makes it a regular part of their lifestyle. They feel better after a workout and feel strongly about making healthy choices. When exercising they seem at ease and in the zone. Healthy choices are not a tough for enthusiasts, they enjoy them.
Attitude number eight is the Uninformed. This person would make healthier choices if they only knew how to do it. There is great potential for this attitude. With the right instruction they can become an enthusiast.
Attitude number nine is the Addict. This person goes beyond enthusiasm for fitness and has crossed the line into addiction. They actually have a compulsion to work-out and often follow a very complex diet. It goes beyond a normal enjoyment of healthy living when the person feels distress if unable to follow their routines.
Attitude number ten is the Hopeful but Harried. These people enjoy fitness and healthy living but are not always able to follow through due to multiple responsibilities and tight schedules. For this person, it is not impossible to exercise and eat healthy, but it is a major stretch. They must make a commitment to it and then plan ahead to make sure they can do what they need to do.
All of these attitudes have described me at different times. However, number ten is most often the case. I would love to be the enthusiast but at this time I am not quite there. You can probably see yourself in one or more of these attitudes as well.
Whatever your attitude, remember that you have a choice. Choose to do the right things even when your feelings and circumstances don't line up. After all, attitude is a choice.

5 Healthy Breakfast Menus - Plus How To Save Money On Breakfast!

Five Healthy Breakfast Menus you can easily make under 15 minutes. These menus are low cost, super simple, and delicious. The whole family will love these Five Healthy Breakfast Menus!
Lately I've been on the search for variety in meals for my family. Let's start with Breakfast! I try to make a balanced breakfast with protein, whole grain carb, some healthy fat, and fruit. It fills my family up until lunch time on school days. Here my top Five Healthy Breakfast Menus-
  1. Whole wheat pita filled with scrambled eggs and cheese, add diced veggies in the eggs if the kids will eat it, and strawberries on the side.
  2. Breakfast Burritos- Whole grain tortillas filled with scrambled eggs, leftover sausage from the day before, salsa, avocado, low-fat cheese, you name it, stick it in there. Find out what they your family loves. Be creative, use shrimp, leftover diced potatoes, etc., plus watermelon on the side.
  3. Hard boiled eggs (I have an egg cooker I got from Wal-greens, just pop the eggs in and it buzzes when they are done, super easy, cook extra for after school snacks), lean turkey sausage, Ezekiel bread toasted (this stuff is SO healthy and my kids love it, because they are use to it!) with 100% all fruit jelly, and sliced banana on the side.
  4. Waffles or pancakes- Make from scratch, takes 5 min to stir together, and 7-8 minutes to cook, actually very easy, fresh, and healthy- Recipe: 2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 1/2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, pinch of stevia, 1/2 tsp sea salt, 4 TBSP soft butter, 2 1/2 cups milk or almond milk, 2 eggs, beaten. Mix dry first, then add the rest together, stir until well blended, adjust the milk as necessary, add a little extra for thinner pancakes or less for thicker pancakes. Can use recipe in a waffle maker or for pancakes. Cook for a few minutes on each side, Variations; add mashed banana, pumpkin, blueberries, cinnamon, vanilla, diced apples, etc. Top with maple syrup, or honey. Try to stay away from regular pancake syrup, the stuff is no good- really. Or top with strawberries! Yum! (You can make a double batch and stick the extras in the freezer, then on another day just pop them in the toaster for a quick breakfast!)
  5. Greek yogurt is amazing because it is full of protein, it is great for breakfast with fruit, and half and of a whole wheat English muffin.
Plus two bonus Breakfast menus- (*smile*)
  1. Oatmeal is great, get the old fashioned oats, takes just five minutes to cook on the stove or microwave, stir in peanut butter, or a scoop of whey protein powder, top with a few nuts, sweeten with stevia or honey, serve with sliced apples or berries.
  2. Smoothies, you can do all kinds of things with smoothies. Now these don't seem to keep my kids full as long, so you will have to see how it works for your family. Start with ice, a scoop of whey protein powder, yogurt, fruit like bananas, strawberries, pineapple, etc (yah, just throw what you have in there!), sweeten with a tad bit of stevia, and blend!
As you can tell I like to use Stevia to sweeten instead of sugar or artificial sugar. You can find Stevia anywhere now! Trader Joes, health food stores, grocery stores. Stevia is all natural, has no calories, and doesn't affect your blood sugar level. It's good stuff.
Money saving tips for my Five Healthy Breakfast menus-
  • Shop at a store such as Sam's Club or Costco for most items.
  • Watch store circular ads for their rock bottom sale prices, buy those items in large quantities while they are at the lowest price.
  • Shop health stores (such as Sprouts) that have big bins of grocery stapes that you scoop yourself, items like whole wheat flour, oats, sea salt, beans, brown rice, etc. The prices are much lower in bulk bins. (Stay away from the bulk candy bins smile)
  • To save money on produce hit up Farmer's Markets or Fruit Stands, prices are about a third of what you would pay in a normal store.
  • Make your own home-made muffins or scones using whole grains and natural sweeteners instead of white flour and sugar, store in freezer. Pull out for breakfast or after school snacks!
I hope you enjoyed the Five Healthy Breakfast Menus and it inspires you to try some new menus for your family. Have fun! If you plan ahead a bit you will be prepared to whip out breakfast in the morning in 15 minutes or less. You can do it! You are busy, but you can have a nice family breakfast in the morning. It's great to pull the family together in the morning for a nice breakfast, it doesn't need to be elaborate or fancy, but nutritious and fun! Send your kids off to school, or off to play after a warm loving breakfast (well, minus the sibling fighting, and the part about "hurry up so you won't be late for school". ha!).

Mind Body Soul Health

Hey ladies, it is important that we are taking care of ourselves and it doesn't just mean getting your hair or nails done on occasion...it means taking care of your mind, body and soul everyday.
Here are some simple things you can do to incorporate mind, body, soul health into your life on a regular basis.
Mental Health
One simple way that you can care for your mental health is reading material on subjects of interest to energize and stimulate your mind. It's important to keep learning and presenting yourself with challenging questions for further research and social inquiry.
Another why to activate your brain juices is by participating in activities that get you exploring your creativity such as writing, painting or drawing.
Emotional Health
It is so important to have healthy outlets for your emotions, unbalanced feelings bottled in can lead to physical illness.
Rather than keeping feelings of anger trapped in your body, you can scream into or pillow or use it as a punching bag. But remember that the safety of yourself and others is a priority when exploring healthy outlets for anger.
If you are sad about something, writing your feelings in a journal or sharing what's going on with a trusted friend can both be very nurturing.
Physical Health
We all know that taking care of our bodies is essential to keeping them vibrant and strong, but most people aren't committed to exercising or eating healthy on a regular basis because of the misconception that they don't have enough time, or have to make huge adjustments to their current lifestyle.
However, you don't have to spend hours each day on a boring treadmill. Things like taking a 20 minute walk on your lunch break or playing with your kids at the park (rather then simply watching them) are great ways to increase your physical activity.
To make some improvements to your diet, carry fruit, veggies or nuts in your day bag. Eating healthy, light snakes throughout the day assists with eating less and lighter during your meal times because you wont be starving.
Spiritual Health
Your spiritual health is an important part of your mind, body, soul health as well. You are not just a skin bag, you are a creative, energetic being who has a reason and purpose for existing in your human form.
Taking time out of your schedule to meditate has many benefits including mental clarity and stress reduction. Meditation will also enable you to be more in tune with your intuition....your gut feelings. You can reek the benefits of meditation with as little as 5 minutes a day.
Spending time in nature, near tress or plants or the ocean are great ways to get connected to the beautiful world that you are a part of. I often experience an overwhelming sense of gratitude when I am in nature.
Meditation and spending time in nature allows you to step outside of your individualized life circumstances and into a world that is whole perfect and complete...an experience that is both stimulating and calming.
Conclusion
Ladies we are not just a body, a mother, a wife, a business owner or staff member we are dynamic ever-evolving beings. We are better at everything we do when we take care of our mind, body, soul health.

5 Ways to Promote Positive Mental Health

Positive mental health is a great way to ensure you lead a long, happy and healthy life. Maintaining your mental health is easier than most people think and will have a significant impact on your everyday life.
Would you like to have more energy? What about a good night sleep? How you would like to go an entire year without catching the flu once? Achieving a positive mental health state will not guarantee these things, but it sure will help.
Here are the top 5 things you can do to help promote positive mental health in you and your children:
1. Eat Healthy. Eating fast food 3 times a week and downing a few cold ones before bed might be easier than making a home-cooked meal and more enjoyable than drinking a cold glass of water but it won't do a whole lot for your health. Eating home-cooked foods (especially fruits and vegetables) and staying away from the fast food joints will help you achieve the healthy lifestyle you desire.
2. Drink Lots of Water. To maintain a healthy lifestyle, average individuals are expected to consume at least eight glasses of water a day. And while this seems like it may be a lot, it's actually not. Eight glasses is almost equivalent to filling up your water bottle a few times between waking up and going to bed. Remember, if you work out, you will need to increase your water intake to compensate for the water you're burning off while exercising. Drinking water will detoxify your body and restore it back to a healthy state - especially after drinking coffee or alcoholic beverages.
3. Kick the Bad Habits. We've already mentioned it a few times but eliminating significant alcohol intake will have positive results on your mental health. Likewise, kicking other bad habits like smoking and drinking considerable amounts of coffee will also help keep your mental health at its best.
4. De-Stress. Stress is one of the leading causes for poor mental health. When you're stressed out, your body has to work harder to keep up and, overtime, it will take its toll on your body and your brain. Next time something stressful happens, try lighting some candles and taking a bath. If that doesn't work for you, try letting off some steam by going to the gym or going for a run. Keeping a positive frame of mind will promote positive mental health and eliminate undue stress on your brain.
5. Book Regular Check-ups. Unfortunately, you can do all of the things listed above and still suffer from mental health problems. In fact, you might have a mental illness and not even know it. Make sure you're mental health is in good condition by booking regular appointments with your doctor. He/she will be able to confirm whether you're lifestyle is healthy or identify where you may need to make some changes.

Top 10 Worst Foods To Health

As people's lives get busier, concerns about food and health get put in the back burner. People would rather have food that is fast to prepare, appealing and delicious, and don't think about how these foods may affect their health. However, keeping your diet healthy is not all that difficult. Even if you can't do without certain foods in your life, at least stay away from these top ten worst foods to eat as much as possible.
1. Processed Food - Although they're extremely easy to prepare and convenient, these babies are loaded with preservatives, which can increase a person's likelihood of having cancer. A diet of processed foods will give you loads of salt and fats, but none of the nutrients that your body really needs.
2. Frozen Dinners - When you go home at night, the last thing you'd want to do is to cook a meal. Most people settle for microwaving frozen dinners as it's both cheaper and easier. These dinners are filled with artificial flavorings and preservatives so they can last longer in your fridge. They are also low in nutrients, and high in calories.
3. Potato Chips - People think that munching on these is good for their health because technically, potatoes are good for the body. However, these not only contain bad carbohydrates, they are also filled with a carcinogen called acryl amide.
4. Doughnuts - When it comes to food and health, majority of pastries raise a red alarm, but none are as deadly as the doughnut. Yes, doughnuts are extremely tasty and easy to munch on, but they are also loaded with sugar, especially the glazed variety. A large glazed doughnut on its own already contains 250-300 calories and 10-20 grams of fat.
5. Low Fat Labels - Beware of foods that say they're low fat. Most manufacturers of calorie-loaded foods often market low-fat versions of their wares so that health conscious people will be more comfortable when buying them. However, these may destroy your diet even more since you're more likely to eat more because you don't feel the guilt associated with binging on fatty foods.
6. Carbonated Drinks - Soda is delicious and it quenches one's thirst really well. However, do you know that each can of soda contain no less than 10 teaspoons of sweeteners like sugar? Since these drinks are carbonated, they also increase the likelihood of gastric pain, hyper acidity, ulcer, and even pancreatic cancer. Chugging several cans per day also puts you at risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
7. Margarine - Margarine brings a plethora of food and health issues simply because they are filled with Tran's fats, which is the main culprit for bad cholesterol. A diet filled with margarine will not only pack on the pounds, it can also hurt your cardiovascular system and give you loads of health issues like hypertension and heart disease.
8. Sugar-Free Food - In the same way that low-fat labels can misguide you; sugar-free food is also extremely dangerous because you tend to eat more of these because you don't worry about the sugar content. Also, since they don't have any sugar, most companies use artificial and chemical preservatives to give flavor to these otherwise bland foods, making it dangerous to your health.
9. Liquid Meals - Manufacturers say that drinking these is equivalent to one full meal, so if you're on a diet or don't have time to eat, this will still give you the calories you need. However, there is no substitute for real food, and although these may contain calories, they don't contain the proper nutrition your body needs daily.
10. Pork Crackles - Tasty and delectable, these pork crackles are absolutely dangerous to people who are conscious about their health. Deep fried and salted fatty pig skin is filled with bad fats, salt, and should be avoided at all cost.
Now, it's not bad to have these once in a while, but if you're really meticulous about food and health, there are a lot of alternatives out there to keep you from grabbing one of these the next time you go to your favorite supermarket or restaurant. Remember, health is a worthy investment, and it all starts with what you eat.
I am always talking, reading or writing about health. I am especially interested in organic health tips. As a person I strongly believe we should take responsibility for our own health and work together with doctors and other health care professionals.

Acupuncture for Good Health

History
Acupuncture is an ancient system of medicine originating in China. The earliest records of its use date back five thousand years. Doctors visiting China brought acupuncture to the west in the twentieth century. They were amazed to see operations performed on fully conscious patients using acupuncture as an aesthetic.
How many people benefit from acupuncture?
Over two million treatments are currently given each year in Britain alone. It is a therapy which is growing in popularity.
How does it differ from Western medicine?
Chinese medicine describes the processes inside and outside the body in energetic terms. Western medicine describes physiological processes of the body in terms of biochemical changes that occur and how they influence the actions of organs.
Chinese energetic terms refer to vital energy (qi), which travels through your body along pathways called meridians. When you are in good health the flow of qi is smooth and uninterrupted, but when illness strikes this flow is disturbed.
Acupuncture is particularly effective for those conditions which Western medicine finds difficult to treat.
How does acupuncture work?
An acupuncturist stimulates precise points along the meridians to restore your flow of energy and return you to full health. Many people actually describe a tingling sensation along the exact pathway of a meridian, without even knowing it exists.
Acupuncture also works on the physical level. A patient arriving with a headache, or stomach ache may well witness the pain fade away throughout the course of a treatment.
Acupuncture works on the emotional level. It is deeply relaxing. Have you ever wanted to change places with someone who always seems really chilled and happy? Acupuncture can change your own paradigm, from before treatment, to after treatment. Things that bothered you before treatment, suddenly seem no longer such a big deal. Equally, motivation which seemed difficult to muster, post treatment seems to flow easily, and direction and focus become re-aligned.
Improvement to symptoms may hold for the longer term, or they may come back within a week. However with on-going treatment it is likely that symptoms will improve, if not disappear in the long-term.
I have always found it bizarre, and had distrust for the Chinese acupuncture shops in the high street. How could acupuncture, cure a whole list of ailments. However, now I have studied and witnessed its effectiveness, I understand, it can do all it purports to do.
Acupuncture is particularly effective for physical complaints: migraine and headaches, gynecological problems, pain in any part of the body, skin complaints, and emotional imbalances: depression, grief, fear, anger.
The WHO (World Health Organisation) now recommends anyone with back pain should be referred to an acupuncturist (or physio) for a series of ten treatments before medical tests are carried out.
I also believe anyone with depression should also be referred to ten treatments of acupuncture before anti-depressants are prescribed. That's not to say pharmaceuticals don't have a place, but it would be nice to find a solutions, rather than a plaster over the wound.

Effects of Junk Food on Health

The phrase "junk food" itself speaks of endangerment to health. Junk foods are deemed to be trash foods as they are high in fat and sugar components regardless of how they are labeled by manufacturers. The apparent effect of junk food on health administers when there is excess in intake. Teenagers comprise the higher bulk of junk food fanatics and they seem to be unhealthy with such a lifestyle of munching in chips, fries, crackers and other snack foods in front of the television. Majority of junk food choices do not deliver beneficial nutritional values, but you could actually integrate a few junk foods in your diet with an assurance that it is of moderate amount.
Regardless of age, the effect of junk food on health settles as bad as it could be especially when you eat too much of some. You will end up easily getting exhausted by being a junk food fanatic. Because it doesn't balance the appropriate levels of energy you ought to consume, you have tendencies of craving for more food when you eat junk foods. Also, you can be less focused with anything you undertake at work and home because what you are acquiring from junk foods are mere fats, not healthy ingredients. Also, you will experience lack of important oxygen that eventually result to poor brain functioning.
In the long run, your heart cannot function as it should because of too much cholesterol absorbed in the body as an effect of junk food on health. If there's too much plaque in the arteries, your heart has to assert more effort in pumping blood which may cause you to be in fatigue. The excess amount of cholesterol in your body can destroy the liver as well, leaving you overweight at the same time. Most of obese kids have acquired their overweight dilemma because of too much junk food intake. Most of those who are junk food eaters are likely to get diabetic at any point in their life because of high presence of sugar in the body. High blood pressure due to great amount of sodium from junk foods can also occur.
As they always say it, whatever is avoided comes so tasty. Ice cream, chocolate, junk foods, fries, burgers, potato chips and shakes are all tempting. You can perhaps be disciplined in indulging in these types of food because they are initially unhealthy to have. Too much of anything sweet or salty is health threatening. Not only will you have a bad effect of junk food on health, you will also largely embrace mood swings, decreased enthusiasm to handle workouts, weight gain and constipation problems if you eat junk foods unstoppably. In lieu of them, you can pick fruits and high-fiber food for good snacks and meals.

Top 5 Raw Food Health Benefits

The raw food diet is exploding in popularity. It's estimated that the phenomenon is growing at the rate of approximately 100% per year! And when you examine the health benefits of the lifestyle, it's not hard to see why. Living foods are the healthiest option for humans, and it's the diet our bodies were designed to eat.
Let's look at the top 5 reasons raw is best:
1. Enzymes - Enzymes are necessary for many bodily functions. Enzymes are necessary for digesting food. Raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains contain all of the enzymes needed for digesting them. When those foods are cooked, they lose many of those enzymes, and your body has to provide them. There is evidence that the body only produces a finite amount of enzymes in its lifetime, and aging may accelerate rapidly once the supply begins to dry up. By consuming foods in their living state, you can protect your body's natural supply and potentially live a longer, healthier life.
2. Vitamins - You probably only know that the vitamin content is significantly reduce when food is cooked. By eating foods raw, you will preserve the vitamin content and get far more bang for your buck from the foods you consume. Because the cooking process destroys much of a food's vitamin content, those 5 servings of vegetables the food pyramid recommends may not be enough.
3. Calories - Raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and grains are generally lower in calories than meats and other foods people usually consume. Although there are a few higher-calorie raw foods, most of them can be enjoyed in mostly unlimited quantities without the fear of gaining weight.
4. Antioxidants - Although some antioxidants, like lycopene, may be more effective in foods that are cooked, others may be destroyed during the cooking process. Antioxidants are believed to play a role in fighting cancer and slowing the aging process, and may have may other health benefits that haven't yet been discovered.
5. Additives - Processed foods often have dangerous chemicals and additives that can cause all kinds of health problems. Many processed foods contain chemicals and additives like saccharine, BHA and BHT, MSG, Potassium Bromate, Aspartame, and nitrates and nitrites among others. Hydrogenated vegetable oil is another very dangerous additive. These things should be avoided, and you can easily avoid all of them by simply sticking to a natural diet like the raw food diet.
Many other health benefits can be received from this lifestyle. Some people have reported having minor changes in their appearance, like seeing gray hair turn dark again or seeing their skin clear up dramatically. Others have seen effects such as weight loss, normalized blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol, improvements in arthritis and bursitis, and many others. For many, the diet seems like a miracle. In reality, it's just the type of food humans were meant to eat. We are the only species who cooks their food, and we also have more natural health issues than any other species. It may be a coincidence, but it's one humans probably shouldn't leave up to chance.

Health Benefits of Using Mayonnaise in Food

People all over the world use different kinds of sauces to enhance the taste of their food. There are many kinds of sauces prepared from different items. Mayonnaise is one such sauce. Generally the sauces are prepared from the items of plant origin, for example Tomato Sauce, chili sauce or the Mustard sauce. But Mayonnaise is prepared from an animal product. Actually the Mayonnaise is prepared from egg yolk by slowly mixing oil into it and blending it with a blender or mixer, with a mortar and pestle, or even with whisk or fork. While the oil is added slowly, the yolk is whisked vigorously so as to disperse the oil. Generally in Indian preparation, a bit of mustard is also added to make the taste sharper and slightly tangy. European recipe uses olive oil with vinegar or lemon juice. Herbs and spices can also be added to this sauce.

Mayonnaise acts as a base for many other sauces as well. For example, it can be combined with Tomato Ketchup to make a new type of sauce, the Fry sauce. Mixed with mustard sauce and Tomato Ketchup, Mayonnaise can also be used as a condiment. Generally people have a misconception that Mayonnaise is an unhealthy food. But researches have shown that it has many benefits and is really good for our health.

This sauce has been found to prevent strokes in postmenopausal women. So they are advised to add this sauce as their salad dressing on a regular basis. Also Mayonnaise is found to have a lot of Vitamin E. Actually it is this Vitamin E in the sauce that helps people protect from strokes. If a person is deficient in Vitamin E, he can very well include Mayonnaise as in his diet as this food product can resolve the deficiency very quickly. It also helps the heart and lungs to function properly and it also aids in the blood circulation. Mayonnaise has a rich content of omega -3 fatty acids which are actually good for heart.

Another health benefit of Mayonnaise is found to be on skin. Sure, it does work from within, but it can also be applied directly to the skin. This makes the skin soft and radiant. When washed, it carries off the dead skin cells with it and leaves the skin looking fresh and glowing. Thus a mayonnaise massage is always good for your face and hands. When applied directly on the skin, the ingredients penetrate the skin directly and nourish it faster and better. It can also be used as the treatment for sunburn. When applied to the affected part, it has a cool and soothing effect. Even the dry, dead skin from the elbow and flaky skin at the feet can be removed by rubbing some Mayonnaise on the problem area.

Mayonnaise can also be used as a conditioner for hair. Just take a tablespoon of Mayonnaise and massage it deep, from the scalp to the tip of the hair. After 1 hour wash with regular shampoo. It not only makes the hair soft and silky but also gives it a shine. Mayonnaise is also a good treatment for lice. Massage it over the scalp and leave for an hour, wash and the lice are drained out with the sauce. So, we see that Mayonnaise is beneficial rather than harmful for our health.

Author loves to use Mayonnaise Sauce instead of Tomato Sauce or Tomato Ketchup, as this is good for our health also.
